In memory of Naïria Winklaar

Naïria was born on a Saturday, September 18, 1982. The pregnancy and childbirth period were without complications. Three weeks after birth, strange movements began to be noticed around Naïria especialy during breastfeeding.

Diagnosis: West syndrome.

West syndrome is an epileptic syndrome indicative of a certain age and a certain type of epileptic seizure called “infantile spasms” or “salaam seizures.” Typical features of West syndrome include the abnormal EEG recording called hypsarrhythmia and developmental stagnation while epilepsy is not under control.

After the age of one, West syndrome gradually progresses/transforms into another syndrome.

Despite her epilepsy, which could never be controlled with medication, and the behavioral changes caused by the medication she had to endure, Naïria was always a happy child.

On August 25, 2003, Naïria suddenly passed away. The cause of her death was SUDEP, Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.
